Used cars under Rs 15 lakh: Most interesting & exciting models found

There are the usual run-of-the-mill cars, but occasionally you do find some exciting cars too.

As enthusiasts, we’re always on the lookout for exciting vehicles around us. Yes, we have social media, but I’m sure there are people like me who spend a lot of time on OLX, Cars24, Facebook marketplace, etc. going through used car listings. There are the usual run-of-the-mill cars, but occasionally you do find some exciting cars too. Kicking off this thread by listing out some interesting cars in and around Mumbai that are on sale (Links to the listings have been added to the names). Do share some interesting cars that you found.

Why not include the TSIs in the used car market?

Example: 2018 and later models could be bought around the price range of 15 lakhs.

Eg: The used Skoda Superb and Octavia even with the DQ200 gearboxes have not seen many complaints of the gearboxes failing.

A friend of mine bought a 2017 Skoda Superb L&K for around 15 lakhs and it drives like a dream!

This started in late 2020. A car that got me drooling for months as a worthy fun, project car – the Skoda Laura. With around 5L for a good used car + 3L for any modifications needed, it was just too good.

As days, weeks and months passed, the drool got even longer and stickier, the budget kept growing and suddenly a BMW 1 series in red colour popped up in Chennai as a possibility. With the right age, mileage, and price bracket (12L), everything seemed right. But then for some 2-3 lakhs more, a 3er could be had. And why not? A 3er is a proper dream car after all, isn’t it?

So for 15-17 lakhs, get a 320d and keep some 3 lakh for any maintenance required in the near future. Then there were some concerns around 7+ years old German luxury cars maintenance woes, service bills costing as high as the car’s value at that age. So the “itch” kept growing and so did the drool and so did the budget.

I kept browsing and some more time passed. Then a 2017 330i popped up in Mumbai (this was in around June 2021). It had a decent mileage of ~38k km. The asking price was ~28L, of course, I was hesitant and for a few days I looked at the listing, just looked and looked and did nothing about it. When after 4-5 days I grew the courage and called the dealer, the 330i was gone.

A few weeks passed by. And then I saw a white 2018 330i M Sport shadow edition. It was in a BMW showroom. Had just 23k KMs and the asking price was 33L. This one was an M Sport, top of the line, was a year newer and had 14k KMs less. With further negotiations, 32.50L was set as the final price. It was 3 years old then.

This is my story of letting the itch grow and ending up 33 big ones poorer. And of course, I love every bit of her, still, I think getting a cheap Laura/Octavia, sorting any maintenance issues and then modifying it is a much better way of satisfying that itch rather than getting a costlier German luxury saloon that didn’t need any fixing or modifying. The time I would have spent on researching for those modifications would have given me so much joy. Love for the machine would have grown bit by bit. Maintaining an old car has a charm of its own, you get to know the machine by heart. Plus the scope for modification a VAG car has is unmatched in India.
