Where you will be fined for driving – towns and cities you need to know about
Mark Harper says ULEZ expansion is 'about raising money'
Petrol and diesel drivers will be slapped with daily fees for driving in some of the UK’s biggest towns and cities. Clean Air Zones have been installed in many regions across the country with polluting petrol and diesel owners most affected.
The new fees have mostly been installed within the last 12 months as road users continue to struggle with the cost of living crisis.
London
London’s Ultra Low Emissions Zone (ULEZ) has been extended from Tuesday 29 August. It means motorists in Outer London boroughs as far out as Harrow and Bromley will be slapped with the £12.50 per day fees if their vehicle is non-compliant.
This will add up to weekly fees of £87.50 or a monthly charge of around £375 if owners use their vehicles every day. Sadiq Khan has pledged to hand out a £2,000 scrappage scheme grant to every Londoner affected by the plans. But further help has not been issued to drivers who live outside London and travel inside the new charging zone.

Birmingham
The Clean Air Zone is in operation 24 hours a day, 365 days a year for roads inside the A4540 Middleway.
Non-compliant vehicles will be charged £8 per day to use the zone with heavier vehicles slapped with £50 per day charges.
Motorists must pay within a 13-day window to avoid being hit with a penalty charge notice.
This includes six days before you travel into the charging areas, the day you use a vehicle inside the zone, or six days after a journey has been completed.

Bristol
The Clean Air Zone was launched in November 2022 with dozens of petrol and diesel owners affected. Private petrol and diesel cars are forced to pay £9 per day to use the roads inside the charging zone.
However, bigger vehicles such as HGV’s, buses and coaches will pay a £100 daily fee. Euro 4,5 and 6 petrol vehicles built from 2006 will not be charged while Euro 6 diesel models, built around 2015 onwards, are also not liable.
Oxford
Councillors introduced a Zero Emissions Zone (ZEZ) back in February 2022 with daily fees for almost all vehicles. Unlike ULEZ and many other clean air zones, even clean petrol and diesel models are slapped with fees.
Vehicles which emit 0g/km of CO2 are the only ones exempt from the costs with hybrid cars paying £2 per day to use the zone.
The charges increase in increments with vehicles not meeting Euro 4 petrol or Euro 6 diesel standards slapped with a £10 daily charge.
Portsmouth
Officials have introduced a slightly more lenient policy in Portsmouth with private cars, motorcycles and vans exempt from fees. This means ordinary motorists will not be issued heavy charges to use their local roads in a win for residents.
Instead, only non-compliant taxis and private hire vehicles will be issued the £10 daily fee. This rises to £50 for non-compliant HGV’s, buses and coaches.
Which other cities have Clean Air Zone charges?
Bradford, Sheffield and Tyneside (covering Newcastle and Gateshead) also have a Class C Clean Air Zone in place. Class C regions do not charge private road users and instead focus their attention elsewhere.
Instead, these areas only issue fees to light goods vehicles, HGV’s, buses, coaches, taxis and private hire vehicles.
