Top three safest cars for older drivers unveiled with Skoda and Nissan on list
These are the safest cars for elderly motorists
The safest cars ideal for older drivers have been unveiled with models from Skoda, Mercedes and Nissan making the top three.
The list was compiled by insurance expert Saga who stressed that staying safe on the road is a “priority” for every motorist, particularly those later in life.
Saga said that motorists will travel “less frequently” as they get older meaning owners would be well within their rights to get something secure.
They explained: “You could consider a vehicle with cruise control technology, which limits the car’s speed when required.
“And if you’d like to see which vehicles have been highly rated for safety performance, see the Euro NCAP website.”
Skoda Fabia
The hatchback model secured a five-star Euro NCAP rating when it was tested back in 2021.
The model achieved notable success for its “adult occupant” safety, scoring a whopping 85 percent on the examiner’s tests.
The vehicle is fitted with an advanced eCall system which automatically dials the emergency services in the event of an accident.
Technology is also fitted which offers drivers a range of extra protections in a safety boost.
A ‘Driver Alert’ tool detects tired driving and encourages motorists to pull over. A lane support system also corrects the vehicle when it strays out of the white lines.
Euro NCAP’s safety report said: “The passenger compartment of the Fabia remained stable in the frontal offset test.
“Dummy numbers showed good protection of the knees and femurs of both the driver and passenger. Škoda showed that a similar level of protection would be provided to occupants of different sizes and to those sitting in different positions.”

Mercedes Benz EQS
This model secured the honour of EuroNCAP’s best in executive car class for 2021 after a sublime test.
The futuristic model scored a quite stunning 96 percent on the “adult occupant” test with a 91 percent result on the “child occupant” exam.
The car also features a lane support system which scored an impressive 5.1 out of six while under assessment.
The car is also fitted with a speed assistance tool that can quickly determine local limits using a camera and digital mapping.

The machine is also fitted with a sophisticated seatbelt reminder system while some versions offer direct eye monitoring to detect any fatigue.
EuroNCAP added: “The EQS is equipped with a centre airbag to protect against occupant to occupant injuries in side impacts.
“The airbag performed well in Euro NCAP’s tests, with good protection of the dummies’ heads. Tests on the front seats and head restraints demonstrated good protection against whiplash injuries in the event of a rear-end collision. A geometric analysis of the rear seats also indicated good whiplash protection.”
