‘My genius method will remove scratches from your car using a £1 item’

Many drivers know the pain of trying to park a car only to scrape the vehicle on an object that is out of sight, leaving a nasty-looking scratch.

However, whilst scratches and scuffs on a car’s bodywork can ruin it’s appearance, a social media user has shared a clever trick that can improve or remove them with a simple household item.

The TikTok user @dashishuoche, who regularly posts videos to help viewers drive and make the most of their car, explained that drivers can repair the area with a small amount of toothpaste.

In the video, he said: “Don’t worry. Do you have toothpaste? Toothpaste usually contains abrasives. On primer scratches like yours, just put toothpaste on the scratches.

“Then wipe it back and forth with a rag. You can easily wipe off the scratches.”

Toothpaste can be used to remove scratches due to a fine polishing agent commonly found in it, which can smoothen edges to make the paint defect less noticeable.

However, drivers who are considering the tip should always remember to clean the affected area first, in order to remove any dirt or grit that could cause further damage to the paintwork.

Then, they should apply a small pea-sized amount of toothpaste to a microfibre cloth and gently apply it to the affected area.

However, whilst the trick will work on light scratches that are in the clear coat, the top material, which is applied to protect the paintwork, deeper scratches require other methods.

Scratches that go deeper into the primer or paintwork often require the area to be sanded using fine paper to remove harsh edges.

In some cases, a professional will also need to respray the area, which should be done shortly after the scratch was formed to prevent rust.

Later in the video, @dashishuoche noted that a small amount of toothpaste can also be used to improve visibility from the door mirrors and windscreen wipers.

He added: “Toothpaste has hidden secrets. Apply toothpaste to the mirrors after cleaning. It can not only remove fog, it can also prevent condensation in rainy days.

“When the [windshield] wiper is not clean, put a little toothpaste on the scraper [blade]. It can perfectly solve this problem.”
