‘I’m a mechanic – petrol and diesel owners must stop driving if they hear noise’
Leading mechanic Scotty Kilmer has issued a critical warning to petrol and diesel drivers this autumn.
Mr Kilmer has stressed motorists need to “stop driving immediately” if they hear a particular noise coming from inside their vehicle.
He has stressed that a clunking sound could indicate a major car issue which could cost thousands of pounds to repair.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Mr Kilmer said: “If your car clunks when you slow down I’m going to show you what it means.
“Now when you take your foot off the gas and decelerate and it clunks, pray that it’s something simple like a bad joint on your driveshaft.

“If you have a front-wheel drive car it’s the joint here called the CV joint, that could make the noise. Or it could be a broken motor mount if the clunk comes from the front.
“There’s rubber inside and if the rubber is all ripped you need to replace it. Now pray it’s one of those.”
According to AutoDoc, repairs to a damaged CV joint could cost between £300 and £500. Meanwhile, ClickMechanic said an engine mount usually costs between £110 and £220 to fix.

However, Mr Kilmer has warned the noise could be the sign of a much bigger issue which comes with an eye-watering repair bill.
He added: “If it’s not it would be coming from inside the transmission. When you take your foot off the gas instead of the transmission getting forced pushed on it going forward, it’s now freewheeling and there’s different pressure inside and worn gears inside will clunk as you’re decelerating.
“So if your car has turned into a clunker, now you know what to do with it.”
Car Doc warns that the average cost of a gearbox replacement in the UK is between £2,000 and £5,000. However, they stress that a reconditioned gearbox can be picked up for around £1,500 for those on a tiger budget.
BookMyGarage has admitted gearbox issues can be easily diagnosed by looking for a range of simple factors. They said a gear stick which is “shaking, grinding or jerking” may indicate an issue while a “burning smell” is also a cause for concern.
Motorists may also notice their vehicle’s gearbox is “out of sync” and not engaging properly.
They added: “Usually, a gearbox should be smooth to change gears, more or less silent, and odourless, so if any of these changes, it is an indication that something is wrong.
“If your gearbox is clunking, whining, buzzing, or humming, it could be that one of the many parts that make up your gear system is faulty or has moved out of place.”
