Drivers urged to be prepared this winter as 34 percent dislike driving at night

As the shortest day approaches, a new study by the location service what3words has revealed that 34 percent of UK motorists feel uncomfortable driving in the dark.

With many drivers set to get behind the wheel over the Christmas period to see friends and family, over a quarter of motorists have admitted that they worry about breaking down during dark winter nights.

Edmund King, head of The AA, urged drivers that they should download the what3words app to help others find their location if an issue occurs.

He explained: โ€œBreaking down in an unfamiliar location can be a daunting experience at any time, even more so if travelling to visit family and friends at Christmas.

โ€œwhat3words helps drivers and our contact centre staff to identify an exact breakdown location. By working together, The AA and what3words are using the latest technology to provide drivers with even more peace of mind.โ€

The AA has forecast that December 23ย is expected to be the busiest time on the UK roads, despite having just eight hours of daylight.

According to what3words, 40 percent of drivers who are uncomfortable when travelling in the dark state their fear is due to a lack of street lighting.

The survey also found that 53 percent of motorists are also concerned about driving during snowy and icy conditions.

Helen Smith, Dispatch Team Leader at the Yorkshire Ambulance Service, urged drivers planning to travel during cold conditions to take their time.

She advised: โ€œWe get called to many road traffic collisions when driving conditions are difficult due to bad weather so we would urge motorists to stick to the speed limits and adjust their driving according to the conditions.

โ€œWe would also encourage everyone to download the what3words app, so they are prepared in the unfortunate event of coming across, or being involved in, an accident. When we receive a 999 call itโ€™s vital that we can identify the location quickly so we can send help where itโ€™s needed fast.โ€
