Classic 1960s Ford Mustang given amazing ‘future-proof’ electric car restoration

A classic 1960s Ford Mustang has been fully electrified to bring the historic model into the 21st century.

Successful motorsport engineers at Alan Mann Racing (AMR) have fully restored the iconic model with a new electric car powertrain and modern chassis.

From the outside, the glistening orange model looks like a Mustang which rolled off the production line 60 years ago.

However, the new powertrain gives the car a new lease of life and rubber stamps its place on the road for many years to come.

Henry Mann, son of founder Alan Mann, and director of AMR explained: “We have been watching the incredible growth of so-called resto-mods with interest.

“We’ve seen cherished cars that owners want to improve, and we’ve seen those that owners want to future-proof, and we believe our new 1960s Mustang Coupe meets both needs.

“This particular model played a large part in the history of our company and is close to our hearts. It was the first racing Mustang to achieve international success for Ford, and, back in 1964, it was all prepared in-house by my father’s operation.”

The base car can be sourced by AMR or provided by the owner and sent in for upgrade works.

Experts will then carefully remove the internal combustion powertrain while the remaining mechanics and bodywork may also be stripped.

The whole vehicle is then rebuilt around a new state-of-the-art compact electric motor and a modern racing-standard chassis.

AMR stresses the design and feel of the original 1960s interior is retained as much as possible for authenticity.

But, every element is still replaced with modern additions also fitted such as climate control and Bluetooth connectivity.

The car is capable of over 220 miles of range and optimised charging means batteries can be topped up from 20 percent to 80 percent in just 40 minutes.

Each Mustang takes around 1,000 hours to complete, depending on the condition of the base vehicle. All this comes at a price with an upgrade set to cost individuals a staggering £200,000.

However, the model could just offer a peep into the future of classic car motoring in the UK.

Henry added: “We are tremendously excited to be growing our core expertise, as this effectively future-proofs our own business as legislation continues to tighten around the use of classic cars and combustion engines.

“We will always love the sight, sound and smell of a finely-tuned internal combustion engine, but we recognise there may come a time when they are no longer viable.

“We believe electrification is a good way to keep these fabulous cherished classics on the road.”
