Used SUVs for Rs 15 lakh: Harrier v/s Compass v/s CR-V v/s Hyryder
Inclined towards having a 4WD or AWD, as I plan to do a Himalayan Odyssey once a year.

Hi there!
I am in a bit of a pickle and would greatly appreciate some sage advice here. I want to buy a pre-owned SUV up to (or just above) 15L bracket. The options available are:
The use case is for daily office commute, plus weekend trips, and a Himalayan odyssey once a year (hence the inclination towards a 4/AWD).
Any pointers on reliability, ASS, and cost of maintenance would be much appreciated.
Here’s what BHPian vattyboy had to say on the matter:
Get a new car preferably Seltos 1.5 Turbo Htk plus @ 17 lakhs or Kushaq 1.5 Tsi Ambition.
Don’t buy pre-owned with a 15 lakh budget.
I am a compass owner and its maintenance is on the higher side approximately 50k per year including service, part change and insurance. Plus this one is a 2017 model which is already 6 years old so it will require even more maintenance.
A used Tata Harrier is a strict no as per a recent discussion in the forum a few days ago in a separate thread and the Hyryder is not fun to drive and will only take you from point A to B while a 2015 CRV is too old to consider.
Here’s what BHPian OpenRoads had to say on the matter:
Let me be loud and clear. The cost of maintenance and 4WD SUV are indirectly proportional esp when it’s a premium product like Jeep Compass.
If your Himalayan thing requires an actual 4WD then start with Thar, Scorpio classic and then Compass in ascending order in terms of budget, cost and maintenance.
If you don’t need a 4WD and need low maintenance then any new SUVish car with good GC will do like Elevate or similar.
Harrier is good but definitely not something which can be called most reliable or have a great ASS track record.
Here’s what BHPian shashi792 had to say on the matter:
My pick would be the Jeep Compass (O) (late 2017) Diesel 4WD, ~30K on the odo, price around 12L.
Since you have already stated your budget of 15L, I would spend another 1L on regular maintenance just after I buy. This is just to ensure you don’t have niggles for the next few years. For me, I would rather sit in my Punto Abarth waiting for the tow truck to take me to my FNG, rather drive past in a Maruti Zen Estilo. It’s not point A-to-B for me (But that’s just me).
Here’s what BHPian bijims had to say on the matter:
The CR-V would be the most reliable of the lot, but it is already 8 years old and 70k on the Odo, but price is on the lower side too, considering the overall value, it should be a good buy.
I wouldn’t recommend the Harrier over any of these owing to it being from the initial lot (2019 to early 2020)
The Jeep Compass 4X4 would fit most of your requirements, after-sales service and costs would be higher but considering the price and features it would be a good buy overall.
I am not a fan of the AWD Hyryder due to its low power, torque, and interior quality, fit, and finish, it’s a Maruti with a Toyota badge.
Overall from the list given, the Compass would be my pick, followed by the CR-V.
