Paint quality issue on my new 3 Series GL: BMW proactively resolves it
The problem began when I noticed a paint chip below the blue ribbon placed on the car by the showroom

Dear Team-BHP Community,
I hope this message finds you all in good health. I am writing to share an issue I’m facing with my recently acquired BMW 3GL and to seek your valuable input and advice regarding the matter.
I purchased my BMW 3GL from Infinity Motors in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, in May 2023. Unfortunately, the ownership experience has not been as smooth as I had hoped, primarily due to a perplexing issue with the car’s paint.
The problem began when I noticed a paint chip below the blue ribbon placed on the car by the showroom on June 1st, 2023. The dealership explained that this chip could have been caused by a small stone hitting the bonnet, which, at the time, seemed like a reasonable explanation.
However, the situation has escalated since then. My car now exhibits a total of five different paint chips, with two on the bonnet, two on the right side, and one on the left door. What’s particularly confounding is that there are no visible dents or marks on the car’s exterior that would typically accompany such chipping. It is logical to assume that if a stone were to hit the car with enough force to chip the paint, it should leave a dent. The absence of any such dents raises questions about the origin of these paint chips.
I visited Infinity Motors again on October 3rd, and this time, I expressed my concerns to Mr. Nigel in the service department. He, too, attributed the paint chips to stones hitting the car. However, despite thoroughly inspecting several cars at the service center, we couldn’t find any other BMWs with similar paint chip issues. Moreover, discussions with friends and family who own or have owned BMW vehicles revealed that none of them had encountered similar paint problems.
Even if we were to entertain the possibility that these paint chips are indeed caused by small stones hitting the car with enough force to chip the paint but not enough to create a dent, this still raises concerns about the paint quality of BMW vehicles. Premium brands like BMW are known for their meticulous quality control, and such issues are unexpected, to say the least.
I reached out to BMW India, and their response reiterated the dealership’s explanation. They believe the paint chipping is due to stones and not a result of any inherent issue with the vehicle.
Throughout this process, I maintained constant communication with BMW over email. In a positive turn of events, as a goodwill gesture, BMW took the initiative to address my concerns. They repainted the bonnet and performed smart repairs on the other areas where the paint chips were present.
I must commend BMW for their helpful and understanding approach throughout this experience. The person handling my case at Infinity Motors in Indore also recommended getting Paint Protection Film (PPF) done as soon as possible after the repairs. It’s a suggestion I’ll certainly consider to ensure the longevity and protection of the freshly repainted surfaces.
Once again, thank you to the Team-BHP community for your valuable input and support. It’s heartening to be a part of such a knowledgeable and caring community.
Best regards.
