Wheeler Dealers’ Mike Brewer makes prediction to affect all classic car owners

Wheeler Dealers host Mike Brewer has predicted classic car owners will still be able to use petrol stations in over 25 years, despite a nationwide move towards electrification.

The TV star believes “nothing is going to change” for historic vehicle owners despite the industry’s focus on electric cars.

The UK’s 2035 petrol and diesel car ban means the everyday motorist will have an electric vehicle by 2050.

The National Grid has estimated the number on UK roads by this date will be around 37.4 million.

Erik Fairbairn, an expert at electric car charging firm Pod Point has previously predicted that 97 percent of EV charging will be done away from petrol station equivalents.

This leaves an apparent bleak future for existing firms and a possible headache for those running classic cars running on combustion fuel.

However, Mr Brewer feels petrol and diesel will still be available for historic vehicle owners despite fears.

Speaking to Express.co.uk, he said: “The alternative to that might be the film Mad Max where we are all chasing the last gallon of fuel.

“That’s what people think what’s going to happen. We are all going to be chasing each other spraying in their mouths shouting Valhalla for the last gallon of fuel.

“Nothing is going to happen. Nothing is going to change for the classic car owners.

“Come 2050 I will be able to drive my Porsche 911 and go to a petrol station and put unleaded fuel in it. Nothing will change.”

The number of petrol stations is already in decline from a peak back in the 1950s.

Between 2000 and 2021, over 35 percent of petrol stations closed with just over 8,000 sites now operational.

Tom Senior, Director of Classic, Vintage and Sports Car Finance at Cambridge and Counties Bank has also previously claimed owners would still be able to top up historic models long into the future.

He told Motor Finance Online: “In our view, this should not impact the vintage or classic car sector in any material way.”

He added: “We do not see a point in the foreseeable future where you won’t be able to fuel your existing ICE vintage and classic car.

“These will remain highly valuable, highly attractive assets that for many people, owners and collectors are more akin to works of high-performance art than cars.”

Wheeler Dealers airs Mondays at 9pm and available to stream on Discovery+.
