Volvo’s ‘unusual’ new electric car is more than £10,000 cheaper than Tesla’s SUV
Volvo has announced that their upcoming EX30 compact electric SUV will be priced from $34,950 (£28,627.54) when it goes on sale.
Set to launch in the USA during the first quarter of 2024, it will be the smallest crossover made by the Swedish company, sitting below the C40 and XC40 Recharge.
Jim Rowan, Chief Executive of Volvo, said that the new model will be an unusual car for the company but still offer what customers have come to expect from the brand.
He explained: “The fully electric EX30 might be our smallest ever SUV, but it’s a big deal for our customers and a big deal for us as a company.
“We like to say that the EX30 is small yet mighty because it delivers everything you’d want from a Volvo but in a smaller package. Like any Volvo, it’s an outstanding product that is safe and designed around people and their needs.”

The small crossover shares a lot of its looks with larger models in the range, particularly the sculpted front headlamps, which are connected to sleek air intakes.
From the side, the EX30 looks rugged, with thick matte-black sill protectors which span the long wheelbase and overhangs.
Inside, the Volvo will have a minimal appearance, with the majority of the car’s functions being controlled via a large infotainment touchscreen, which runs Google and the latest version of the brand’s own operating system.

Despite its low price, the Volvo EX30 has been designed to have the lowest carbon footprint of any vehicle made by the company.
According to Volvo, the crossover will produce under 30 tons of carbon dioxide every 200,000km (124,300 miles), 25 percent less than previous electric models made by the company.
In addition, the EX30 will use a large number of recycled materials, such as aluminum and steel in the bodywork and plastics in the interior.
The entry-level version of the Volvo EX30 will feature a single motor which sends 268-horsepower to the rear wheels and can cover a range of 275 miles per charge.
Drivers after more power will be able to choose a dual-motor version, offering 422-horsepower and all-wheel drive.
Whilst the dual-motor set up will offer impressive performance figure, with the EX30 accelerating from 0-60mph in 3.4 seconds, the range will take a hit, covering 265 miles.
