Petrol and diesel drivers can save time filling up fuel with little-known tip

Budget 2023: Chancellor announces fuel duty will be frozen

Petrol and diesel drivers can save seconds next time they visit a fuel station due to a little-known tip which could shock drivers, according to a LeaseCar.UK expert.

Fuel caps can be located on either the left or right side of cars with manufacturers opting for one side or the other.

Meanwhile, petrol stations can be stressful and motorists may forget which side of their vehicle has the fuel filler cap.

This could cause a headache when drivers realise they have parked on the wrong side and will need to pull a petrol pump cord right across their whole vehicle.

However, experts have warned some modern vehicles may include a special light which could save them from an embarrassing situation.

Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, Tim Alcock, spokesperson for LeaseCar.UK, said: “Another little-known symbol on vehicles is the fuel pump light.

“Most people only think that the image of a fuel pump is to help indicate what the petrol or diesel levels are.

“But look for a bold triangle on the symbol which is either pointing to the left or the right of the pump.

“This arrow will indicate which side the fuel cap is on.”

The fuel pump logo and arrow will usually be located in the centre of the car dashboard.

In most vehicles, this will be next to the speedometer making it easily accessible when behind the wheel.

However, the actual location of the logo could vary depending on each manufacturer meaning motorists will need to check their vehicle thoroughly.

But, experts at Scrap Car Comparison have previously warned it was not an exact science with older models likely to have a different system in place.

They explained: “Most of the modern cars will have the little arrow to the side of the pump, which is your answer.

“We still see people at the fuel garages straining their necks and there’s no need for it.

“Some of the older cars may not have the arrow but another good indication is the side of the pump handle on the fuel symbol – this may be the case in a few of the older cars.

“But it is not strictly true that if the fuel symbol is on the right or left of your dashboard dial that this indicates the side of the fuel cap on your car.”
