Motorists told to keep car clean to improve fuel economy as car myths debunked
The mechanic and tyre retailer chain ATS Euromaster has debunked some of the most common myths that thousands of UK motorists fall for on a regular basis.
As the cost of motoring continues to rise, many drivers are looking for ways to save money. However, the company warned that the common myth that it is better to fill a car’s tank in the morning as the petrol is denser is false.
A spokesperson for ATS Euromaster said that the fuel available at petrol stations is kept in temperature-controlled tanks, meaning the outside temperature will make little difference.
They explained: “This theory comes from the fact that petrol is denser when it’s cold, which it is more likely to be first thing in the morning.
“However, fuel at petrol stations is stored in large underground tanks beneath concrete, insulating it from any weather.”

However, ATS Euromaster revealed that some myths believed by many motorists are true and can help drivers save on fuel.
One rumour that the company proved true is that dirty cars can increase fuel consumption, as the dirt can create small dimples on the bodywork which make it less aerodynamic.
As a result, the company claim that motorists who regularly clean their vehicle could see a ten percent rise in fuel economy.

ATS Euromaster’s spokesperson also advised that motorists can save money in the long run and stay safe by buying new tyres, rather than part worn examples.
They added: “With the cost-of-living crisis, finding ways to save money on your car may seem like a great idea, and you can do so by buying second hand tyres.
“However, as tyres are arguably the primary safety feature of your vehicle, ATS Euromaster strongly recommend replacing tyres with new ones, rather than used or part worn. In an inspection of 50 part worn tyres, carried out by TyreSafe, found 63 percent were deemed unsafe to be on the road.”

Finally, ATS Euromaster reassured motorists that driving with an interior light switched on is not illegal, despite many being told that by parents during their childhood.
They continued: “This is a myth that everyone was told as a child and is still believed by a lot of drivers.
“While driving with the interior light on can be very distracting at night and can interfere with your vision, it is not actually illegal or even fine worthy.”
