Little-known driving method that slashes fuel costs is ‘vital’

Motoring experts are emphasising the importance of gear selection for drivers as petrol and diesel costs continue to rise. By utilising the highest gear possible within the speed limit, drivers can enhance their fuel economy and mitigate the impact of high fuel prices.

Excessive speed stands out as the primary culprit behind fuel consumption, prompting experts to urge drivers to adopt a lighter touch on the accelerator pedal. Gentle acceleration plays a pivotal role in achieving fuel-efficient driving.

Driving in the highest gear suitable for the vehicle while adhering to the speed limit is considered one of the most effective ways to attain high miles per hour (mph). In urban areas, drivers are advised to swiftly shift through the gears while maintaining lower revs.

The relationship between engine speed and fuel usage is straightforwardโ€”the faster the engine spins, the more fuel is consumed. Mark Akbar, Managing Director at CarStore, stresses the significance of gear utilisation in saving money on fuel.

Akbar states: “It’s not part of the driving test to learn how to use your gears efficiently; you simply have to be able to use them to get the car to move at various speeds. However, to make the most out of every drop of fuel and maintain maximum efficiency, it’s vital that you’re always using the right gear at the right time.”

To optimise gas efficiency and minimise consumption, it is crucial not to over-rev the engine.

Over-revving leads to increased fuel usage. Additionally, using a gear that is too low for the speed and terrain can strain the engine and result in unnecessary fuel consumption.

Petrol cars tend to operate most economically between 1500 and 2500 revolutions per minute (rpm). To maximise efficiency, drivers should aim to shift up to the next gear whenever they exceed the upper end of this range.

For diesel cars, the optimal rpm range for fuel efficiency is between 1300 and 2000.

It is important to note that the ideal speed for fuel efficiency varies for each vehicle and is influenced by numerous factors, including road conditions, vehicle weight, and even weather conditions. Therefore, drivers should adapt their gear selection strategy accordingly.

By implementing these gear selection techniques, drivers can make a substantial impact on their fuel consumption and overall costs. Not only does this approach benefit individual drivers, but it also contributes to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly motoring culture.
