‘I’ve been a mechanic for years – these durable wheels cost less than alloys’

The popular motoring YouTuber Scotty Kilmer has warned drivers to always consider the wheels on a vehicle before they buy their next car.

The personality has worked with cars for 56 years and now regularly advises other motorists on how they can avoid mechanical issues in the future and recommends which models to avoid.

In one of his latest videos, Scotty recommended that drivers can save money on their next car if it has steel wheels, which can also be easy to work on.

He advised: “These are steel wheels from 1994, they still work. They cost less when you buy a car with it, you pay over $1,000 extra for alloy wheels.

“And even if you’re a bad driver, you hit curbs and these bend, you can bend them back again with a sledgehammer.”

Steel wheels often feature very simple designs which do not look as attractive as many alloy wheels can, however they are often much stronger.

Since alloy is not a pure metal, it can easily crack if the wheels are used extensively over rough terrain, such as when off-roading.

In addition, since the raw material is more valuable, the cost of alloy wheels can be over ten times the amount of conventional steel wheels.

Scotty added that whilst many drivers admire the styling of alloy wheels more, they can be damaged far more easily and often cost significantly more.

He added: “Alloy wheels are easy to scratch, easy to break. If you’re the type of person that often hits curbs, you’re better off with steel wheels you can bend back.

“And even if you break the steel wheels, they’re pretty cheap. You can get them for $50, whilst somebody’s alloy wheels will be $500 or $600 apiece.”

One viewer wrote: “Great old school advice, Scotty. I must agree with the guy who said, ‘if they are hitting curbs, they should not be driving’!”

Another commented: “I have steel wheels for my winter tires and alloys in the summer. I can’t tell you how much better my car rides on the steelies. I have to balance my alloys every second year, but never my steel wheels, which go through winter hell like nothing.”
