‘I’m a veteran mechanic – when to check tyre pressure for most accurate results’
A mechanic with 56 years of experience has explained why you need to check your car’s tyre pressure early in the morning to obtain the most accurate readings.
The auto technician, Scotty Kilmer, explains in a YouTube clip that a tyre’s standard set pressure is when they’re cold.
Scotty (@scottykilmer) adds in his video tutorial that once you start driving, the tyres will get warmer, causing their pressure to increase.
He notes a driver who pulls over on the side of a highway to check their tyre pressure will likely get a false reading that’s many pounds higher than it is.
Scotty suggests streamlining your ability to accurately read and inflate tyre pressure by carrying an air pump in your vehicle.
Having an air pump on hand allows you to skip the inconvenience of driving somewhere to access air only to warm and increase your tyres’ pressure.
This seasoned mechanic adds: “Half of the gas stations you go to today when you’re trying to use their air pump, it’s broken, and it doesn’t even work!”
Viewers commented their thoughts on Scotty’s video, with one YouTube user writing: “I’m from Illinois, and I totally agree about the gas stations air pumps being broken half the time and now they charge a credit card to use em.”

Another YouTube account wrote: “Oh yeah, I needed air one time, traveled to four gas stations, all had broken air hoses.”
A third viewer commented: “This is why I tell tyre shops not to adjust my tire pressure.
“I fill to the correct PSI when cold, but by the time I get to the shop, it will read high, but the tyre shop workers don’t know this and will ‘correct’ my tyre pressure, which makes it too low when cold.”
