‘I’m a mechanic – only stupid people buy cars from these three places’
The well-known motor mechanic Scotty Kilmer has warned motorists of three places that they should never buy a car from.
The automotive influencer, who has worked on cars for over 55 years, posts videos to his TikTok and YouTube channels to give advice to drivers.
He recently told drivers about a little-known button to always press before starting their cars and driving. In another video, Scotty advised viewers that, whilst used car dealerships often stock a wide variety of cars, they typically retail for higher prices.
He explained: “Generally at used car lots they will go anywhere from two to four times what they actually paid for the vehicle that they’re going to try to get you to pay.
“And when you buy a car from a used car lot, they often have a lot of back-end extras that they don’t tell you about until it’s too late.”

In the video, Scotty explained that many used car dealerships offer buyers extras such as extended warranties for additional fees.
However, some locations are known to advertise prices that do not feature fundamental parts of the cost, including vehicle tax.
Scotty advised that, if a viewer wanted to buy a car from a used vehicle lot, they should simply ask how much they want for the car as a whole and drive away.

Additionally, Scotty noted that drivers should always think twice before buying a used car that once belonged to a rental company.
He continued: “When I travel distances, I don’t have time to drive, I fly on a plane and then I rent a car, and when I rent cars, generally, I beat the heck out of them.
“They’re not taken care of by the drivers all that much. Rental cars often take large beatings, over a couple of years hundreds of people probably rent each individual car.”
Finally, Scotty concluded the video by warning drivers against buying a vehicle from a larger ‘car supermarket’ such as CarMax.
He added: “I had a customer a couple of years ago that bought a five-year-old car from CarMax. It had 60,000-something miles on it, and they only saved $4,000 off of what a brand new one would have cost.
“If all you’re saving is $4,000 on a $25,000 to $30,000 car, you might as well just go out and buy a brand new one.”
