‘I’m a car expert – pet owners must use specific button every time they drive’

Drivers travelling with pets such as dogs have been urged to press one button every time they drive.

Tim Alcock, spokesperson for LeaseCar UK has urged drivers to press the interior motion sensor button whenever they intend to leave their animals inside their vehicle.

This disables car alarm sensors inside the vehicle meaning dogs will not cause an alarm to sound while moving around.

Mr Alcock has warned the button is usually located on the overhead console in the centre of the vehicle.

Speaking to Express.co.uk, Mr Alcock explained: “This feature is useful if you need to keep the car locked but dogs or passengers are remaining inside the vehicle.

“Press the button (usually located on the overhead console) before getting out and locking the car. Now, any motion from inside will not be detected and the security alarm will not be triggered.”

Each vehicle will have its own unique way to switch off the tool meaning motorists may need to refer to their handbook if they are struggling.

Volkswagen explained: “Interior motion sensors can normally be turned off using the switch located on the lower B-pillar between the front and back doors.

“If the switch isn’t on the B-pillar, please refer to your owner’s manual.”

Meanwhile, BMW of Sudbury admitted drivers had to press a button on their key fob to deactivate motion sensors in their cars.

Speaking on YouTube, they said: “So when locking the vehicle like normal, just hit the BMW (logo) once.

“And then within 10 seconds hit the BMW one more time. Then the light below the mirror will stay solid for about one second before flashing like normal.

“That’s letting you know the motion sensors inside the vehicle have been deactivated.

“So now if you have your dog inside the vehicle and you leave it unattended, your dog won’t set the alarm off.”

Ford owners can select which type of alarm they want set through their infotainment screen with ‘Reduced Guard’ mode turning off interior sensors.

However, motorists may need to select the mode they wish to use every time they leave their vehicles which will need to become a habit for pet owners.

Ford warned: “Selecting Reduced does not set the alarm permanently to reduced guard.

“It sets it to reduced guard only for the current ignition cycle. If you regularly set the alarm to reduced guard, select Ask on Exit.”
