EV drivers can stop range dropping in winter with ‘effective’ expert advice

The vehicle manufacturer Polestar has shared a number of tips that can help electric vehicle owners get the most out of their car throughout winter.

As more motorists get behind the wheel of their first electric car, they may have noticed their vehicle’s range drop during colder weather.

Jonathan Goodman, head of Polestar UK, said that there are many ways in which drivers can maximise their electric car’s range when the weather gets colder.

He explained: “With temperatures having officially dropped, electric car drivers will be wondering how best to prepare for winter weather.

“But there are easy and effective things you can do to maximise the range and performance of your EV and keep yourself comfortable at all times of the season.”

First, Polestar UK advised that electric car owners should precondition their vehicle before setting off on their journey.

This feature, offered on many modern electric vehicles, heats up the battery pack to its optimum temperature to improve the range.

The company also noted that preconditioning can also help to heat up the windscreen, meaning less time needs to be spent scraping and demisting in the morning.

Polestar UK also noted that motorists must drive efficiently when the weather is cold, which can prevent putting themselves and other road users at risk and improve range.

When the roads are wet or icy, drivers should accelerate and brake gently, travelling wherever possible at a steady speed.

Motorists are also advised to use the ‘Eco-Mode’ drive setting on their vehicle, which reduces some power to preserve the battery.

Finally, drivers can make the most out of their electric car in the winter by being prepared for all situations on the road.

Polestar UK highlighted that those planning on going on a long-distance trip should pack items such as a blanket, torch, and shovel in case of a breakdown.

The manufacturer also advised that drivers should regularly check their vehicle’s tyre pressures and treads to prevent skidding and prolonged stopping distances.
