Drivers urged to keep car battery warm to prevent annoying cold starting issues
The automotive parts company LKQ Euro Car Parts has recommended drivers to make sure their car battery is kept in good shape this winter to avoid issues and expensive replacements.
As the temperature remains low, more drivers are experiencing issues with their car, with the AA reporting that mechanics attended 240,000 breakdowns in November and December 2022.
A spokesperson for LKQ Euro Car Parts noted that the impact cold temperatures have on batteries can lead to cars struggling to start.
They wrote: “Winter weather can have a negative effect on car batteries, affecting the chemical process that holds charge.
“Drivers also tend to be using lights and heating within their vehicle more often, which can have an impact on the battery. Grinding or clicking sounds when turning on the ignition could be a sign the battery is at risk of breaking down.”

As the temperature decreases, the car’s battery is not able to hold as much energy, meaning there is less power that can be used to start the engine.
Whilst all car batteries are affected by colder temperatures, older models often struggle the most when it comes to starting, mostly due to deterioration caused during the summer.
Many experts suggest that, whilst their life can vary heavily, motorists should generally replace their car battery every three to four years.

Nevertheless, LKQ Euro Car Part’s spokesperson highlighted that motorists can keep their car’s battery in good shape by parking it somewhere warm.
They advised: “To keep your battery warm, make sure you are driving your car regularly and keep it in a garage, if possible, where it is protected from the chill.
“If you are having a hard time starting your car, turn off all the electrics and dip the clutch when you turn the key.”
