61 percent rise in car insurance prices
The employment training company Essential Site Skills (ESS) has revealed that car insurance prices for tradespeople have reached an all-time high.
In 12 months, the average price for a 12-month premium increased from £453 to £728.26, a rise of 61 percent.
Catherine Storer, Executive Director of ESS, said that rising car insurance prices could discourage people from becoming an essential worker.
She explained: “The recent surge in car insurance premiums is more than just a financial nuisance; it’s a significant barrier for tradespeople who rely on travel for their livelihood.
“With fuel prices already in flux, this added expense could potentially sideline thousands of essential workers across the UK.”

UK motorists have experienced significant increases in the price of insurance during 2023, with the Association of British Insurers (ABI) reporting that rates have gone up by 15 percent during the first three months of the year.
The car insurance company Admiral noted that the prices have risen for a number of reasons, including an increase in the number of claims related to extreme weather conditions and a spike in thefts.
In addition, the firm also highlighted that the past 12 months have also seen an increase in the cost of hiring skilled mechanics and longer waiting times for spare parts.

Catherine is calling on car insurers to lower premiums for tradespeople, warning that it could increase prices of labour and cause delays.
She added: “The rise in car insurance costs for tradesfolk is not just a financial roadblock, but a broader societal issue.
“If our tradespeople can’t afford to be on the roads, not only do they miss out on vital work to keep them afloat, but projects of all sizes across the UK will grind to a halt.”

Whilst the cost of car insurance has increased, many motoring experts have highlighted that there are a number of ways drivers can lower the cost of their next premium.
First, if it is possible, drivers should see if the price of the insurance changes if they park in a more secure location, such as a private parking space or garage.
Motorists should also add an experienced driver to the policy if they are likely to use the vehicle in question and try different descriptions of their job title.
