The van insurance company Zego has offered drivers advice on how to keep concentration when behind the wheel to avoid accidents.

As Christmas approaches, many drivers are set to spend more time on the road as they buy presents and visit loved ones, which could lead to fatigue.

Sten Saar, CEO of Zego, noted that the company’s tips are important for all drivers, particularly during the winter months.

He explained: “With it being such a busy time on our roads over the holidays, it’s vitally important that all drivers take the necessary precautions to keep themselves and others safe.

“The drivers we insure are no exception – in fact, they’re probably the most important people to use these tips and tricks since they spend so much time out on the roads. It’s imperative they stay safe because, in our view, they are key workers for our economy, not just over Christmas, but all year round.”

First, Zego recommended that drivers should always try to get the best night’s sleep possible ahead of their journey, particularly if they need to set off early in the morning.

Whilst the company sympathised that working schedules may affect when drivers are able to rest, they highlighted that getting a good night’s sleep is paramount to staying alert behind the wheel.

Motorists who begin to feel tired whilst driving are advised to pull over in the nearest possible service station and take a 20-minute nap.

Zego also advised drivers that they can stay alert by being considerate about what they eat, particularly on colder days.

When the temperature drops drivers are less likely to notice when they are thirsty, meaning it is important to drink plenty of water before setting off.

However, motorists were advised to avoid consuming anything that includes caffeine up to two hours before setting off, with drinks like coffee using up large amounts of energy at a very fast rate.
