Toyota has introduced a diesel mild-hybrid powertrain option for its Hilux pickup truck in the international market.

As per reports, the new powertrain adds a belt-integrated starter-generator to the Hilux’s 2.8-litre, 4-cylinder diesel engine with a 48V battery under the back seat. The result of the new hybrid powertrain is a power & torque increase of 16 BHP and 65 Nm, respectively. Toyota also claims a 5% increase in fuel efficiency compared to the standard diesel engine, however, no official figures have been disclosed.

The hybrid powertrain option is said to have also improved the pickup’s off-road ability. The regen braking system now improves its stability on steep descents, while the electrical assistance ensures smoother acceleration on rough terrain. Toyota has also paid special attention to waterproofing the electrical components, ensuring the Hilux retains its 700 mm water-wading capabilities. The pickup’s luggage-loading capacity also remains unchanged at 1000 kg max payload and a 3500 kg towing capacity.

Kwinten Sijs, Senior Manager for Product Marketing, Toyota Professional, stated, “We are acting and thinking as a multi-pathway [manufacturer] and that goes for all our models, including Hilux. It is of course a global model, so this needs to be considered during development.”

He further added, “Currently, there is no concrete plan in terms of alternative powertrains on top of this one, but for sure that is something which is being considered. Maybe in the coming months, there will be a more concrete roll-out of alternative powertrains for Hilux. But currently, we still have to go with the ICE engine. It is a first, small step.”

The new Toyota Hilux diesel hybrid is scheduled to go on sale in international markets sometime in mid-2024. Prices for the pickup will be announced closer to the time of launch.
