The electric vehicle leasing company DriveElectric has revealed the most shocking driving laws in the UK, as they warn motorists of the consequences of breaking the rules while behind the wheel.

Whilst the Highway Code features many rules on how motorists should act, some drivers may not be aware of how serious some offences can be.

Mike Potter, CEO of DriveElectric, warned that breaking these laws can increase the cost of car insurance and, in some cases, a driving ban.

He explained: “Accumulating 12 points on your driving licence in less than three years can get you disqualified from driving.

“On top of this, getting points on your licence will also result in an increase of your insurance policy, as your insurance provider will want to be informed about all motoring convictions in the past three years (in some cases, this may be five years).”

Whilst many drivers are aware that drink or drug driving is a serious crime, some drivers do not know that simply sitting in a car whilst over the limit is an offence.

According to the Highway Code, it is illegal for a motorist to be left alone in their car whilst under the influence of alcohol or drugs, even if they do not intend on driving anywhere.

Drivers found to be breaking this law could face up to 10 penalty points on their licence, a fine of up to £2,500 and a three-month prison sentence.

Don’t miss…

DriveElectric also warned drivers that they can break the law by using their mobile phone when paying for fast food in a drive-thru.

In the UK, motorists are only able to use their phone in the driver’s seat when the vehicle is safely parked and the engine is off.

As a result, even if they are paying for their food, drivers could receive six penalty points and a £200 fine if they are spotted touching their phone whilst the engine is running.
