Winter usually means one of two things for sports car owners. One, you’re clearing a hibernation space in the garage to park it up during the cold and wet months; or two, you’re writing a classified description this very moment with some glossy snaps you took when the weather was half decent. That’s because the general rule of thumb has been to buy something sporty early in the year, have some fun with it during the summer months and then pass it on when the weather takes a turn.

Not exactly hard to see why, is it? Unless your sports car has all-wheel drive and plenty of ground clearance (some Audi TTs and perhaps a Porsche 911 Carrera 4) then the chances are you’ll have to deal with traction issues – and that can be a right pain if said sports car predates the advent of traction and stability control. Naturally, we love a challenge here at PH. Just look at the cars we took to on icy Welsh mountain roads for our favourite car of the year test in 2022. But lighting the rears up when driving to work or taking the kids to school can be annoying at best and, er, humbling at worst.

That doesn’t mean you need to park your sports car for the winter, though, as proved by a group of well-prepared PHers at last year’s icy Sunday Service at Thruxton circuit. At the risk of sounding like a broken record, winter tyres are an absolute must for a performance car when the weather turns. Sports and track-focused tyres are mega in the summer months, but they provide precious little purchase when the cold weather rolls in. Performance tyres can also be more temperature sensitive and are less likely to generate grip when they’re stone cold, so winter rubber is definitely the way to go.

The easiest way to get hold of a new set of tyres is by heading on to eBay. We all know it’s the home of car parts and accessories, but it also has a colossal collection of winter essentials – including tyres – that’ll have you ready to face the rain, snow and ice. Moreover, eBay has over 3,000 tyre fitting centres across the UK, taking the hassle away from having to find a fitter yourself. Simply plug your car’s details in to filter tyres that fit, choose a set and then pick your nearest fitting centre. It’s as simple as that.

Want to be really prepared? Consider investing in a car boot rack to bring extra supplies along for your journey. Sports car boots can be tiny, after all, and you’ll want to make sure there’s enough space to bring along extra supplies such as a tool kit (just in case you get stuck) or even just an extra suitcase to pack in those puffy winter coats. Alternatively, you could go for a boot-mounted spare wheel holder because a) nobody wants to wait around in the snow waiting for the breakdown service to arrive and b) it’ll make your car look like an old rally machine.

That’s just the tip of the iceberg of what’s on offer (this is eBay, after all). Best of all, it’s offering PHers a 20 percent discount on winter essentials including de-icer, scrapers, replacement bolts and a whole lot more. Just follow the link here and get your sports car ready to take on the everything from drizzle to blizzards.
