Green NCAP tests are conducted to assess the environmental impact of cars, irrespective of their powertrain.

The testing agency recently conducted and published the assessment results of the Tesla Model S, MG5 EV and the petrol-powered BMW X1. While the two electric cars received good ratings, the petrol-powered SUV scored a relatively low rating.

The BMW X1 used for the Green NCAP tests was the entry-level sDrive 18i, powered by a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine producing 134 BHP without any form of electrification. Being a petrol-powered car, the X1 obtained a low score on the Greenhouse Gas Index due to its CO2 emissions, securing 2.1/10 points. However, the X1 scored strongly in the Clean Air Index with a 7.7/10, thanks to its strong exhaust after treatment. This helped the BMW X1 achieve an overall average of 45%, earning it a 2.5-star rating.

The Tesla Model S and the MG5 EV secured a 5-star rating in the Green NCAP tests, with an average of 97% and 95%, respectively. The Model S tested was the AWD dual motor variant with a 100 kWh battery. The car secured a perfect 10/10 score for the Clean Air Index, while managing an impressive 9.4/10 for energy efficiency and 9.7/10 for the greenhouse gas index.

Similarly, the MG5 EV secured a 10/10 for clean air index, while energy efficiency and greenhouse gas index were 9.2/10 and 9.5/10, respectively.
