The used vehicle retailer Big Motoring World has warned motorists that they could risk overpaying for their next car if they do not make necessary checks.

Whilst the trade price experts Cap HPI has revealed that prices of used cars in the UK fell by 4.2 percent during October 2023, there are still many ways drivers can lose thousands.

Ben Goodwin, Sales Director at Big Motoring World, advised all drivers thinking about buying a used car that they should always study the cars history by running a HPI check on the number plate.

He explained: “A HPI check is a comprehensive test that can reveal details on a car’s history, including any previous accidents, mileage, and even the car might be registered as stolen.

“Any good dealership should be able to reveal the vehicle history, but it can be a bit less secure when buying from a private seller – you should run a HPI check whoever you buy from.”

By checking a vehicle’s number plate using one of the many HPI websites, drivers are able to find out information surrounding the vehicle, such as it’s engine and whether it is taxed.

However, buyers are also able to look at the vehicle’s history, including previous MOT test results and whether it was previously stolen or written off in an accident.

Big Motoring World noted that some used vehicles on sale could have been repaired following an accident, yet still feature issues such as loose wires or squeaking.

Don’t miss…

Ben also advised buyers to check how many miles the car has covered, with high-mileage vehicles more likely to need replacement parts.

He said: “No matter what kind of condition it’s in or how new it looks, make sure to ask how many miles are on the clock, as it may reveal that the car has been driven much more than you think.

“Mileage has a big impact on the car’s value, as key car parts need replacing every so often. Additional costs can vary greatly, with brake pads, which need replacement every 20,000 miles costing £80-150.”
