According to a report, the USA is seriously behind in battery manufacturing & research compared to countries like China.

Reports state that Mark Warner, Senate Intelligence Committee Chair & Joe Manchin, Energy Committee Chair, have written a letter to the Energy Department making a strong case to boost battery manufacturing in the US to help keep up with the demand. In the letter, the two US Senators mention how the US is lagging “10 to 20 years behind Asia in commercialization of battery technology.”

China currently dominates the EV battery supply, accounting for more than 75% of the total battery cell production. The country is also the world’s top producer of Graphite, refining more than 90% of it into a material that is used in all EV battery anodes.

In comparison, the US produced less than 10% of the total lithium-ion batteries in 2022. The letter from the two senators also pushed towards the creation of next-gen battery tech that could potentially rely less on Chinese minerals.
