The Ford Transit Custom is an ideal base for a campervan, as Ford itself has proved by offering a camper version of its medium-size van called the Transit Custom Nugget – yes that’s its real name, so stop giggling. However while the Custom Nugget looks like a suitable companion for a quiet weekend in the countryside, this new concept looks like it will see you through the end of civilisation as we know it.

Designed by German tuning house Loder1899, this heavily modified Transit Custom is prepped to go way off the beaten track. Thanks to the addition of a lift kit, along with 18-inch rims and chunky 255/55 R18 tyres, the Transit Custom 4×4 sits 80mm higher than stock, while large plastic wheelarch extensions have been added to accommodate the wider rubber.

The front end gets a crash bar for a bit of extra protection, along with two high-performance PIAA headlights. If you still need help lighting the trail or your campsite, there’s eight additional spotlights mounted to the roof rack which carries everything you might need for a short expedition. That includes an expandable roof-mount tent, jerrycan and storage boxes, but if everything hits the fan, there’s also a full spare wheel, shovel and ramps to help you get back on your way.

Before any survivalists out there start ringing up Loder1899 to place their order for their own Apocalypse-ready Transit Custom, this is still just a concept for now. But some version of it will be part of the Loder1899 brand’s revival in 2024, which makes sense as its parent company delta4x4 produces off-road parts and accessories for cars ranging from the Ford Ranger and Jeep Wrangler, to the Suzuki Jimny and Tesla Model Y.

Loder1899, which became known in recent years for its tuned versions of Aston Martins, Fords, Jaguars and Land Rovers, is also working on a more street-focused version of the Transit Custom with a sharper body kit, lower ride and 20-inch wheels.
