Britain’s best used car has been named as the BMW 3 Series by consumer champion WhatCar?

The 3 Series was crowned the winner in two categories, scooping the Best Used Executive Car and Best Used Hybrid Car award.

Capable of up to 62.8mpg, the 3 Series saloon has one of the best fuel ranges on the market making it ideal in a cost-of-living crisis.

The model is also ideal for petrolheads with the M3 delivering 543bhp achieving 0-60 mph in around 3.8 seconds.

According to WhatCar? the 3 Series was selected due to its “immense driver appeal”.

The great range of engines available, upmarket interior and class-leading refinement were also acknowledged.

WhatCar? used cars editor Mark Person said the vehicle was a “desirable choice” and “great value” which stood out from the rest.

He explained: “The task of picking just one winner seems to get more and more daunting with each passing year. In the end, though, the 3 Series stood out.

“It’s a desirable choice that does almost everything exceptionally well, which means you can buy it with your head as well as your heart, and its versatility means it won not one but two of our classes this year.

“It was the variety of options it offers the used car buyer, from swish petrols to frugal diesels and a highly tempting hybrid, that gave it the victory. That this immensely appealing executive car should also be such great value when bought used just sealed the deal for us.”

The car was selected based on a range of factors including price, strong reliability, product quality and running costs.

Prices for a second-hand 3 Series with under 30,000 miles under its belt will set motorists back around £20,000.

However, models with slightly more on-road experience (around 100,000 miles) can be picked up for as little as £3,000.

Some older models in poor condition can even be secured for as little as a couple of hundred pounds for those looking for a restoration project.

The BMW was not the only award winner with WhatCar? Handing out gongs in eight categories.

Other winners include the Audi TT which came out on top in the best used sportscar group.
