They share cycle lanes with bikes, providing an easy, cheap and clean way of covering the last mile or two of a commute.<\/p>\n<p>In the UK they remain controversial and it\u2019s still illegal to use privately owned e-scooters on public roads and pavements. But they continue to be popular, either with people willing to take the risk of being prosecuted or with users who need to get around private land such as camp sites, commercial properties and race-track paddocks.\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/media.autoexpress.co.uk\/image\/private\/s--nuRJy1T7--\/f_auto,t_related-embed-mobile@1\/v1676470488\/autoexpress\/2023\/02\/Electric%20scooter.jpg\">Clarity needed on private electric scooter laws<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There is still\u00a0hope that the law will be changed and the government has hinted that a decision will be made in 2024. For this reason, we are only testing e-scooters that comply with the existing legislation in other countries, because this is most likely to be mirrored here if the law is changed. This means a top speed limited to 15.5mph, plus lights front and rear.<\/p>\n<h2>How we tested them<\/h2>\n<p>There are a large number of electric scooters available, but we looked for models from established brands and dealers who will be around to honour a warranty and provide parts back-up.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The scooters were tested on a private estate with two riders \u2013 one weighing 80kg and the other 95kg. The route included a four per cent incline to test the motors on the way up and the brakes on the way down. Extra points were given for scooters that were easy to fold and carry. You stand on fold-down footplates either side of a frame, which gives a more natural and comfortable riding position.\u00a0Self-centring steering and wide handlebars \u2013 which can be folded away quickly for easy transportation \u2013 make the scooter feel much more stable too. The Air Pro is more conventional and less interesting design than the winning Advance, but it has the same motor and similar range and weight, yet is \u00a3300 cheaper.<\/p>\n<p>It also has decent weatherproofing, a sturdy frame and larger wheels that give it a solid feel on the road. There\u2019s a large Bluetooth app to control the features and keep an eye on your charge levels, too. The downside is that the Pro is not as easy to carry or as compact when folded as rivals here.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/media.autoexpress.co.uk\/image\/private\/s--2ndlamRb--\/v1683626472\/assets\/partners\/powered-by-motorway_150x70.png\"><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/media.autoexpress.co.uk\/image\/private\/s--bmVxq1DJ--\/f_auto,t_content-image-full-mobile@1\/v1698149015\/autoexpress\/2023\/10\/Best%20electric%20scooter%202023%20Indi%20EX-2_uwzqyq.jpg\"><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Price:<\/strong> Around \u00a3360\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rating:<\/strong> 4 stars<\/li>\n<li><strong>Available from:<\/strong> halfords.com<\/li>\n<li><strong>Power:<\/strong> 350W<\/li>\n<li><strong>Scooter weight:<\/strong> 14.2kg\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Range (claimed):<\/strong> 18 miles<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you don\u2019t need to go quite as far on a charge and are willing to sacrifice a few features, the Indi EX-2 is great value. Its smaller size means it\u2019s easier to carry too, and we like the skateboard-like footplate.<\/p>\n<p>The motor has less power than most of the rivals here, but we were surprised that it wasn\u2019t far behind the more powerful machines on our hill test, especially with the lighter rider.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>There are compromises, though. The smaller wheels and frame result in a more nervous feel\u00a0on rough surfaces, and some of the parts don\u2019t\u00a0feel as though they\u2019d survive everyday use.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Buy now from Halfords<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Ducati Pro-III<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/media.autoexpress.co.uk\/image\/private\/s--Z8ESq4GK--\/f_auto,t_content-image-full-mobile@1\/v1698146518\/autoexpress\/2023\/10\/Best%20electric%20e-scooter%202023%20Ducati%20PRO-III_pua77m.jpg\"><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Price:<\/strong>\u00a0Around \u00a3800\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rating:<\/strong> 3.5 stars\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Available from:<\/strong> moovelectric.co.uk<\/li>\n<li><strong>Power:<\/strong> 350W\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Scooter weight:<\/strong> 17.5kg<\/li>\n<li><strong>Range (claimed):<\/strong> 31 miles\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You don\u2019t expect sensible features to be the biggest selling points of a product from sports- motorcycle company Ducati, but the Pro-III\u2019s\u00a0most notable attribute is the claimed range of\u00a031 miles. This is thanks to a battery that\u2019s\u00a0bigger than those in any of the rivals here.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>There are other neat touches too, such as an RFID pass key to unlock the Pro-III, and a big display. It rides well, especially on smoother roads and the twin disc brakes, operated by two levers on the handlebars, inspire confidence. On the downside, this is a heavy scooter and it\u2019s only just powerful enough for heavier riders on slopes. It looks relatively pricey too.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Buy now from Moovelectric<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Swifty Air-E<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/media.autoexpress.co.uk\/image\/private\/s--jT7aK80x--\/f_auto,t_content-image-full-mobile@1\/v1698146517\/autoexpress\/2023\/10\/Best%20electric%20e-scooter%202023%20Swifty%20Air-E_vxwhxk.jpg\"><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Price:<\/strong> Around \u00a31,950\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rating:<\/strong> 3.5 stars\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Available from: <\/strong>moovelectric.co.uk\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Power:<\/strong> 250W\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Scooter weight:<\/strong> 14.3kg\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Range (claimed):<\/strong> 25 miles\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>While the Pure Advance looks quite futuristic, the Swifty has a retro style. The big wheels make it look like a folding bike with the saddle and crossbar removed. Those 16-inch wheels also give the Air-E exceptional comfort and stability on rougher surfaces, so it can be used on gravel and grass where a regular scooter would grind to a halt.<\/p>\n<p>The motor is too weedy for anything but the gentlest of slopes with a heavy rider, although\u00a0the \u2018frictionless\u2019 drive means it is at least easy\u00a0to push or scoot using your own power. It\u2019s an interesting alternative to conventional designs but we struggle to recommend it at this price.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Buy now from Swifty Scooters<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Xiaomi 4<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/media.autoexpress.co.uk\/image\/private\/s--fDOzCGCu--\/f_auto,t_content-image-full-mobile@1\/v1698146517\/autoexpress\/2023\/10\/Best%20electric%20e-scooter%202023%20Xaomi-4_iedmx9.jpg\"><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Price:<\/strong> Around \u00a3550\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rating:<\/strong> 2.5 stars\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Available from: <\/strong>halfords.com<\/li>\n<li><strong>Power:<\/strong> 300W\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Scooter weight:<\/strong> 14.2kg\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Range (claimed):<\/strong> 22 miles\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Xiaomi\u2019s latest version of its biggest seller is packed with useful tech and features. There\u2019s a Bluetooth app in addition to a flash-looking LCD display, which allows you to switch between three modes: Standard and Sport for regular riding, plus a Pedestrian setting, which makes walking up hills easier. And you may well need to get off and help the Xiaomi up slopes, because the 300W motor feels weedy compared with the competition here. That means most riders will have to pick the Sport mode, which uses the battery charge much faster, but the scooter\u2019s biggest issue is the lack of waterproofing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Buy now from Halfords<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Verdict<\/h2>\n<p>Pure\u2019s radical Advance really does push the scooter game along. Its design makes it safer and more comfortable to ride, while it is also easier to carry or put into a car\u2019s boot. Its long range and decent performance complete a winning package.<\/p>\n<p>Pure\u2019s older design, the Air Pro, still holds its own, though. It may not look as interesting and it isn\u2019t as good to ride, but it is good value and has the sturdiness to survive daily use.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If you want to spend less and don\u2019t need the Pure pair\u2019s robust build and performance, then the Indi EX-2 surprised us with its performance, and is easier to carry around.\u00a0<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Pure Advance\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Pure Air Pro\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Indi EX-4<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong><em>Looking for four wheels instead?
