We know that all of us here at PH hold our cars in particularly high regard. MOTs once a year and services are standard. Some of us even go the extra mile with consulting specialists and investing in meticulous detailing. However, even the most dedicated car enthusiasts can overlook critical aspects, like replacing wiper blades or ensuring the health of those black circles that keep our cars grounded.

Winter is coming and it’s time for us to have that discussion again about the importance of tyre maintenance. It’s not just about the impact on your vehicle’s handling or your ride comfort; underinflated tyres could be hurting your wallet.

Underinflated tyres compromise your vehicle’s handling but also take a substantial toll on your fuel costs. Research conducted by TyreSafe, the UK’s premier tyre safety charity, suggests that British drivers collectively waste up to £1 billion in fuel every year due to underinflated tyres.

In the UK, one in five drivers have never checked their tyres. That becomes three in five for young drivers. Resulting in 57 per cent of vehicles being driven with underinflated tyres. While modern vehicles can provide reminders for maintenance tasks, classic cars and older models lack such digital conveniences.

F1 presenter and racing driver, Naomi Schiff, has been working with Esso this year in partnership with Kwik Fit to help raise awareness of the campaign which they’re running. “The statistics are concerning, and they highlight the importance of campaigns like this to educate people on the importance of frequently checking your tyres. We all want drivers to be safe on the road, and if it saves them money too, it’s even better. It’s great to see two industry leaders working together to offer a nationwide free service, accessible to everyone.”

The challenge, even for car enthusiasts, is consistently remembering to check your tyres monthly. Tyre pressures can fluctuate during the winter months, making it crucial to ensure your tyres offer maximum grip in potentially slippery conditions. In light of this, Esso has joined forces with Kwik Fit again this year to offer free pop-ups across the UK, designed to assist drivers in determining if their tyres are winter-ready.

Roger Griggs, Communications Director at Kwik Fit, underscores the simplicity and speed of tyre checks, emphasising the immense financial and safety benefits for those who perform them regularly. Roger noted: “Underinflated tyres, if neglected, may need premature replacement and can seriously compromise road holding and braking performance. Checking your tyre pressure takes just a few minutes, and inflating them takes only a bit longer. So, investing five to ten minutes of your day can save you a lot of money and hassle.”

Starting on October 16th and continuing through October 27th, drivers in the UK can receive complimentary tyre checks at 25 selected Esso stations. As extra incentive, Esso and Kwik Fit personnel will be sharing various prizes to every participant, including e-bikes, AirBnB vouchers, tyre inflators, and more. You can find the full list of pop-up sites on Esso’s website.

This is a promotional feature presented in partnership with Esso
