The popular motoring personality Scotty Kilmer has reviewed what he referred to as “the most hated car ever made”.

Scotty has worked on cars for over 50 years and now posts regularly to his YouTube channel, giving advice to viewers on how to avoid causing damage to their vehicles and recommending cars to buy.

In one of his latest videos, Scotty tested a Fiat 500 supermini, warning examples fitted with an automatic transmission have a bad reputation for reliability.

He said: “The problem with the Fiat 500, amongst other things, is Americans, 96 percent drive automatics. I saw them [Fiat 500 automatic transmissions] blow up with as little as 5,000 miles.

“One of my customers bought one for their daughter, she was driving to her college and the transmission blew up on the way. They really are terrible cars if they are the regular Fiat 500.”

It’s not a race car, it doesn’t throw me into the back of the seat, but it’s a heck of a lot of fun to drive around with a standard transmission.

“And you’ve got to consider, he [the car’s owner] bought it used and paid less than a third of what the car went for originally, and most of the stuff still works perfectly fine.”

Originally launched in 2007, the Fiat 500 is a retro-themed city car which takes a lot of its inspiration from a previous model of the same name, which was built from 1957 to 1975.

Whilst the 500 went off sale during 2019 in the USA and Mexico, there are plans to launch an updated version which is fully electric.

Already on sale in Europe, the Fiat 500e features a range of up to 199 miles and can accelerate from 0-60mph in 9.5 seconds.
