Renault has re-introduced a pure-petrol version of their famous Clio supermini, reducing the price of the car to £17,795.

Whilst buyers will still be able to choose a full hybrid setup, which uses a 1.6-litre engine and two electric motors, the entry level model will now feature a 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine already seen in the Dacia Sandero.

Speaking in April 2023, Fabrice Cambolive, CEO of the Renault Brand, explained what makes the Clio so important to the French company.

He said: “Clio has enjoyed constant success. It is the world’s best-selling French car and a category leader in Europe.

“The new Clio underscores its modern edge as it unveils a new, expressive front end. The E-Tech full hybrid powertrain under the bonnet is a pleasure to drive, emits less, and has a greater range.”

Whilst the 1.0-litre engine is not set to turn the base-spec Clio into a hot hatchback, the company claim that it produces 89-horsepower, which is enough to reach a top speed of 111mph.

Compared to the hybrid, the petrol-powered Clio is not quite as fuel efficient but can still return 56.5mpg.

The new engine has lowered the entry-level price of the car by £3,500, undercutting competitors such as the strong-selling Vauxhall Corsa.

Don’t miss…

The petrol-powered Clio benefits from the facelifted styling, which was introduced to the rest of the range in April 2023, to give the car the same front end as larger models in the Renault range.

The large diamond-shaped badge still takes centre stage, however now features a slightly more intricate design than before, and is surrounded by a larger grille and more pronounced daytime running lights.

Inside, Renault has said that the new Clio is now more sustainable than ever before, with recycled materials making up at least 60 percent of the interior.

We use your sign-up to provide content in ways you’ve consented to and to improve our understanding of you. More info

Whilst the petrol engine was never phased out in some markets, it was briefly dropped from the UK market as part of a pledge to have a full range of full-hybrids and electric vehicles by 2024.

However, Renault state that they have re-introduced the model to tackle the cost-of-living crisis, which has driven up the price of motoring for many.

Nevertheless, the company is also set to introduce a range of fully electric hatchbacks, including the retro-themed Renault 5, by 2025.
