The new MINI Countryman has been revealed with all-electric power available for the first time but internal-combustion engined variants will be retained for the new model, including the range-topping MINI Countryman John Cooper Works (JCW).

Although MINI has unveiled what the Countryman JCW will look like thanks to a series of teaser images posted on social media, full details of the sporty SUV will not be released until 18 October.

The JCW sits on the same UKL2 platform as the new BMW X1, and MINI has said that it will have 296bhp and 400Nm of torque for a 5.4-second 0-62mph time – the same numbers as the BMW in X1 M35i trim. Although MINI has yet to confirm it, this suggests the JCW will utilise the same 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine as found in the X1 M35i.

The Countryman JCW will also receive the ‘ALL4’ four-wheel drive system and we expect to see a sportier suspension set up, uprated brakes, revised steering and a limited-slip differential to help mark it out as the best-driving Countryman in the range.

From the outside we can see the JCW stands out from the standard car (and the all-electric models) with red accents. The red and grey two tone paint have become a typical JCW design trait and this new one will gain a bespoke grille with an insert that looks like a chequered flag, unique alloy wheels, red brake calipers and a bodykit with quad-exhaust tips.

More red detailing can be found on the inside with red stitching on the synthetic leather seats and dash. The same 9.4-inch central screen that is found on the new MINI Cooper should be visible up front, possibly with an extra drive mode to make better use of the JCW’s inherent sportiness.

Pricing for the JCW will start from £39,900 – making it £6,000 more than the 215bhp Countryman S.
