Experts also warned of substantial damage which could lead to \u201ccostly repairs\u201d.<\/p>\n WeBuyAnyCar added: \u201cOverfilling your fuel tank can cause liquid gas to enter the charcoal [canister] or carbon filter.<\/p>\n \u201cThese systems are designed to work with vapours and not liquids. If you overfill your tank, this can cover the vapour intake hole with gas, which is then sucked into the charcoal [canister].<\/p>\n \u201cThis can damage the [canister] and possibly other parts of the system, which can cause the car\u2019s \u2018check engine\u2019 light to come on – and could also leave you with a costly repair bill.\u201d<\/p>\n A light may blink on the vehicle dashboard if drivers have poured too much fuel into their tanks.<\/p>\n Meanwhile, some vehicles will be fitted with automatic shut-off mechanisms which are activated when the tank has reached full capacity.<\/p>\n
