The popular car mechanic Scotty Kilmer has warned drivers to shop around before filling up their cars as petrol prices continue to rise.

The automotive expert often posts videos to his YouTube channel that give advice to drivers on how to save money on their motoring bills.

In his latest video, Scotty advised that drivers can save hundreds of dollars in the long run by driving elsewhere to get petrol.

He explained: “Realize the power we have as consumers is that you don’t have to buy anything if you don’t want to buy it.

“So, look around, use your head. The greedy gas station guy who charges whatever he can because he feels that he can, if the people don’t buy it, he’ll go out of business.”

While petrol prices have not reached the unprecedentedly high levels motorists faced during the summer of 2022, following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, they have been on the rise once again over recent months.

From October 2023, the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) is set to cut oil production by two million gallons each day, driving up the price of gas.

Scotty also noted that there is very little regulation on the price of gasoline, meaning retailers can make massive profit margins selling it.

He warned: “Well guess what, in Southeast Florida gasoline is like $6.50 a gallon at one station, and you might think ‘why is it so expensive there?’

“Because they can. There is no law on the price of gasoline, they can charge whatever they want. You ever notice how when you get closer to an airport the price goes up? Because they can!”

Many experts suggest that drivers can find the cheapest petrol prices in their area by using an app or website that lists the current prices of nearby stations.

Some petrol stations also offer programs that reward customer loyalty by giving drivers discounts each time they buy fuel.

However, drivers who use these programs were warned to not let the points they have received build up too much, as some can expire after a month.

A number of apps can help drivers find the cheapest petrol near them.
