'Looks like' Haas will retain same line up for 2022

Guenther Steiner says reports linking Mick Schumacher to Alfa Romeo are nothing more than F1’s rumour mill “playing up a bit”.

Schumacher arrived on the Formula 1 grid this season with Haas and has pretty much spent his first nine grands prix running at the very back of the pack.

That has led to speculation that he could take a step up the grid next season, joining Alfa Romeo, which like Haas is powered by Ferrari.

Alfa Romeo brushed aside the rumours, Fred Vasseur stating that it is “far too early to discuss” his 2022 line up, with Steiner coming out saying it is just speculation.

“These are rumours,” he told RTL. “This is Formula 1 playing up a bit.”

In fact the Haas team boss reckons he’ll have the same two drivers, Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin, next season.

“At the moment it looks like we will be racing with the same driver pairing next year,” he added.

“We still have to clarify a few details, but everything else is clear.”

“It won’t take long.”

The Italian believes a second season at Haas would be beneficial for Schumacher as he will know the team, its systems, and how they operate.

“What is important for Mick to stay in the same team,” Steiner explained. “To bring in a bit of a constant.

“He knows the people now, he knows our processes. I think he also likes to be part of the team.

“That’s why nothing speaks against him being with us remains.”

He is also convinced that next year’s championship will see a vast improvement in Haas’ results.

“We’ll have a better car,” he added. “How good, I don’t know yet. I’m confident that it will be okay.

“At the moment, nothing speaks against the fact that we won’t be as good or better as Alfa Romeo.”

Schumacher is P18 in this year’s Drivers’ Championship by virtue of his P13 at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
