Tickets have gone on sale for the Goodwood Members’ Meeting, Festival of Speed and Revival, offering possibly the first ray of 2021 hope that something approaching normality will return in the spring. Of course, the organisers are quick to point out that everything depends on wider circumstances – especially with the 78th Members' Meeting optimistically scheduled for May 15-16 – but they expect to be able to run with reduced public access. That means the Goodwood calendar will feature its three headliners for the first time since 2019, with last year’s events amalgamated into the online-only Speedweek.
As excellent as that October event was (we’re still watching replays of it on YouTube), it was always intended to be stopgap before the proper occasions could stage a comeback. So it’s great to see the dates confirmed, with Members' Meeting followed by the Festival of Speed on 8-11th July, followed by the Revival in its normal slot on 17-19 September. As expected, those who had tickets for the cancelled 2020 events and opted to keep them are granted new ones for the 2021 dates. Ticket holders who do not want to keep them are offered full refunds.
The situation is the same for holders of the Young Persons ticket who will have turned 22 by the time of the event – they will be able to keep their reduced entry rate, normally only applicable to 13–21 year olds. Goodwood will be dispatching new 2021 tickets for everyone who keeps them or buys a new one, so there’s no confusion at the gates. As for the events, the on-track action will be unaffected, but the paddock and spectator areas will be operating with the latest Covid social distance measures in place. The number of spectators will also be reduced from normal. No surprises there.
While it's not a complete return to normal, then, it’s the best outcome we could have asked for given the ongoing challenges, and should be good enough to ensure that we have plenty of action to look forward to through 2021. As crowning events on the global historic motorsports events calendar, expect racers and teams the world over to be buoyed by Goodwood’s confidence in the UK's ongoing vaccination programme. Here’s hoping all goes as planned.
