Max Verstappen snaps Mercedes' F1 win streak with win in Austria .. or did he?

Should the victory stand, it would be the first for Honda in F1 since 2006.

Red Bull boss Christian Horner wasn’t waiting for a stewards’ decision in Austria before celebrating Max Verstappen’s provisional victory in the F1 Austrian Grand Prix, the first win for Honda power since 2006.

Verstappen put in a blistering comeback drive through the field to become the first non-Mercedes driver to win a Grand Prix in 2019 but a post-race investigation on the race winning move means that the champagne corks can’t fly in the garage just yet.

Sitting in seventh at the end of lap 1, Verstappen produced one of his finest drives to snatch the provisional victory in the closing laps, and Horner was elated.

“What a drive,” Horner told Sky Sports. “After the start where he got the anti-stall, I thought maybe we could get a podium, but the way he came back, the way he came through the field, the way he managed the tires…unbelievable.

“When he started setting purple laps at the end of the race there and we were closing in and closing in, and we’re not the fastest on the straight. We know the Ferrari’s enormously quick on the straight, but he was so quick around turn one and then the benefit of the DRS, with three, four laps to go you thought ‘this could happen, this could really happen’.”

Giving his opinion on the race winning pass which involved contact between Verstappen and Leclerc, Horner added, “I think he did (give Leclerc enough room).

“Leclerc’s got the opportunity, he’s (Verstappen) fully up the inside and at that point he can’t just get out of the way. Leclerc has to concede the corner at some point. He (Verstappen) goes for the inside, that’s clean, he’s right there. Leclerc obviously comes in aggressively but what are you supposed to do?

“This is just what Formula 1 needs. This is hard racing between two guys that are the future, and if they take this victory away from Max here, that in my view would be stealing from Formula 1. This is exactly what we need, this is the kind of racing that we need. Drivers going wheel-to-wheel and fighting each other.”
