The General Motors Logo Gets a Redesign for the EV Era

01/08/2021 a, General, gets, logo, Motors, The

For the first time in decades, General Motors is redesigning its corporate logo. Gone is the blue background and underlined uppercase “GM” initials. In its place comes a blue box surrounding the GM initials. Only this time around, the letters are lowercase, and the underline is comparatively shorter and lives only under the “m. “

GM’s latest logo marks only the fifth significant change to the company’s insignia throughout its 113-year history. The last time the automaker drastically updated its logo was in 1964.

The new branding arrives in the midst of the company’s decision to invest heavily in electric vehicles. GM is no stranger to EVs, having developed such examples as the EV1 and the MotorTrend Car of the Year-winning Chevrolet Bolt, and the company continues to move forward in the space with its forthcoming Ultium line of EV components, which are due to enter production in forthcoming vehicles such as the 2022 GMC Hummer EV pickup and 2023 Cadillac Lyriq crossover SUV, with others to follow.

GM plans to launch a total of 30 different EV models globally by 2025. Similarly, the automaker’s set a goal of selling more than one million EVs per year in North America and China by the middle of the decade.
