The ‘Autoweek Podcast’ Ep. 62: Peter Hughes at Le Mans, Hot Wheels Legends and remembering Davey G. Johnson

The 24 Hours of Le Mans might be one of the most special races in the world.

On this episode of the “Autoweek Podcast,” host Rory Carroll joins Wesley Wren and Mike Pryson in the studio to talk about the 2019 running of Le Mans. Since no one in the room was actually there, the guys have Peter Hughes call in to talk about his first trip to Circuit de la Sarthe for a 24-hour race.

Peter spins a yarn about his experience and the sights he saw — and explains how you can have fun at Le Mans through a VIP experience or just from running around with the masses. The group also dives into the major problem the World Endurance Championship is facing with only one manufacturer, Toyota, present in the top-tier LMP1 class.

After the fun Le Mans conversation, Rory and Peter remember their friend Davey G. Johnson. Johnson worked at Autoweek before moving on to other publications like Jalopnik, Car and Driver and Motorcyclist, among others. This section was recorded before today’s news that the missing journalist’s body was found.

Wrapping the show, Rory and Wesley talk with Ricardo Briceno, the global head of brand marketing for Hot Wheels. The group talks about the growing Legends Tour, the new high-tech cars rolling out under the ID banner and what cars they want to see scaled down into a Hot Wheel.
