In 2021, the Jaguar F-Type range is, mercifully, pretty simple to grasp. Buyers pick from four cylinders or eight, coupe or roadster body, and that's about it. Some models offer rear- or four-wheel drive, but the days of deliberating over a manual gearbox or a V6 are long gone. By and large that's a good thing, too: the four-cylinder drives really nicely, and the V8 offers caddish charm for not all that much money.
The evolution of the F-Type range over time does mean one or two gems have been lost along the way, however. One of the those was the V6 S, with its sweet soundtrack and ample power, and the other was this: the V8 R Coupe. And by gem, we mean completely berserk hooligan of a sports car.
Launched in 2014, the F-Type R Coupe was a monster: power from the supercharged V8 was up from the S Roadster's 495hp to a massive 550hp and, though the hardtop was a better driving car than the cabrio, it didn't need much provocation to act the fool. Sort of everywhere. Jaguar introduced an all-wheel drive R a couple of years into production and, truth be told, it was the objectively better version, keeping a lot of the rowdy fun with the additional security of a driven front axle. Buyers agreed, too, and that's why the really senior F-Types were soon after only offered with all-wheel drive.
However, a few courageous F-Type buyers did take a punt on the flagship hellraiser, and one or two can be found in the classifieds. Cars like this one, if not the most rounded F-Type package out there, do promise to be an awful lot of fun. Especially at considerably less than half its new price…
In fact, this particular R Coupe must be one of the last; as a 2016 car, it's the youngest PH has to offer. There's additional intrigue for the committed, too, with the fitment of ceramic brakes, a costly option when new. Combine that with the 80kg weight saving over the (very fast) all-wheel drive car and it's easy to understand just how rapid these rear-wheel drive Rs really were. Once the wheels stopped spinning. As an early F-Type (albeit registered quite late) this R keeps the hydraulic steering, too – another nice touch for the traditionalist.
It'll probably be little surprise to find just seven such F-Types in the classifieds, with two at the same dealer. This one has covered just 30,000 miles, backed up by a Jaguar service history. Polaris White may not appeal to all tastes, though it would be fair to say this car as more than enough going for it to offset that potential drawback.
As cars inevitably become safer and more sensible, so the appeal of the silly ones seems likely to rise for a few. The F-Type R, with its savage edge to a stylish Jaguar coupe, looks like a perfect example of the breed. It will require care and concentration (and tyres) to get the best from, but that's exactly the point. At £41,950 it seems a little more depreciating will follow (V8 Roadsters are nearing £30k currently), though clearly not to the level endured thus far. And how cheap can a 550hp Jaguar really get? For those who believe modern sports cars are a bit soft and a tad uneventful, this F-Type should be just the tonic.
