Christmas comes early for US Ford fans, as latest 760hp V8 joins the Performance Catalog

We couldn’t resist. Having covered the news that the Blue Oval was adding the Mach-E GT powertrain to its ever-expanding Ford Performance Catalog, there was no way that the inclusion of a very different kind of engine – the Mustang GT500’s latest V8 – could be ignored. Not least because, in addition, we also drew your attention to Chevrolet’s most powerful crate V8 ever just a couple of weeks ago.
This isn’t high-brow news, of course, or tremendously useful to UK-domiciled enthusiasts; but as ever it’s hard not to be intrigued by the prospect of ordering an enormous V8 out of a catalogue, like your nan doing the family Christmas shopping. As we know from the recent GT500 drive, the Predator 5.2 is a monster of an unit – the most powerful engine ever fitted to a Mustang, no less. And the crate motor gets all that good stuff for a DIY project build: an aluminium block, forged crank, forged rods, forged aluminium pistons and an Eaton TVS R2650 supercharger. On whatever passes for premium fuel in the US, Ford claims 760hp and 625lb ft.
Because of the high-grade componentry, the Predator (or, technically speaking, the M-6007-M52SC) doesn’t come cheap – Ford wants $25,995 for each one. By comparison the 5.0-litre ‘Coyote’ found in a Mustang GT is $9,500, and even some of the burly big block stuff less than $20k. But even those are down on power compared to the mighty Predator; you want almost 800hp, you’re going to have to pay for it.
Don’t forget, either, that the GT500 is only sold as a whole car with a seven-speed DCT. Though all the required engine goodies come in the crate – starter, alternator, air-con compressor and so on – it is just the V8 and no transmission. A dual-clutch isn’t likely to be a cheap addition. It’s engine-only as Ford says in its catalog listing that the V8 is intended “as a replacement part for use only in the applications identified in the product description”, but nobody ever made a great project car by following the rules. Could be quite cool in an old Bronco…
