First series-production BMW i4 rolls off factory floor

BMW will also relocate its entire four-cylinder engine production away from Munich to UK and Austria.

BMW has announced the start of production of its fully-electric i4 sedan at its plant in Munich, Germany. To commemorate the start of EV production, the carmaker rolled out the first series-production BMW i4 electric sedan.

The Munich factory of BMW is nearly 100 years old. The factory manufactures popular models such as the 3 Series sedan & Touring, M3 and 4 Series Gran Coupe.

While 90 per cent of the systems in the body shop were used for the production of the new model, BMW did have to install additional machines and techniques to integrate the high-voltage battery assembly.

BMW is said to have spent 200 million euros to integrate the new machines and systems required to manufacture electric vehicles.

BMW is also aiming to convert its Munich plant entirely to produce fully electric vehicles. By 2023, more than half of the vehicles manufactured at the Munich facility are said to come with an electrified powertrain.
