Third generation BMW midsize SUVs and “coupe” variant SUVs will arrive this coming spring with more power from the S63, twin-turbocharged V8 engine, configured as a “hot V”, which means exhaust exits the heads inside the valley and air and fuel enter outside of it.  Peak power increases 33 horsepower to 600 even at an also even 6,000 rpm and torque peaks at 553 lb-ft between 1,800-5,690 rpm. If you crave more and have the means, BMW also sells Competition versions of both the X5 M and X6 M that add another 17 horsepower. This package produces the same peak torque, but between a slightly wider range of 1,800-5,860 rpm.

Competition package or no, power is channeled through an eight-speed automatic transmission and on to all four wheels. How aggressive shifts occur is based on which of the three selectable levels the driver chooses. Speaking of choice, you can shift on your own with paddles on either side of the steering wheel. 

The all-wheel-drive system defaults to rear-wheel-drive unless power overwhelms them, at which point the computers transfer some juice to the front. Muscle that stays with the rear-axle is split between the sides via an electronically locking rear differential, called M Active. 

A double-wishbone suspension with forged upper control arms holds up the front-end of the X5 and X6, and a multilink set-up with extra bracing take care of the back. Furthermore, BMW engineers increased the camber in front to improve turn-in agility. Additionally, active anti-roll bars come standard, giving the X5 M and X6 M the ability to drastically reduce body roll when the driving gets spirited, yet maintain decent road manners when casually cruising.

15.6-inch rotors get clamped by six-piston calipers up front, with 15.0-inch rotors and single piston calipers handling things in back. Standard wheel size is 21 inches running a staggered tire set-up 295/35R21 in front and 315/35R21 in back. Optionally available, and standard on the Competition models, 21-inch wheels in front, 22s in back, same tire widths.

Visually, M models stand out from the standard models with big openings for air to feed the engine and to cool various radiators and intercoolers. Competition models also have roof and lower-tailgate spoilers. Inside, you get splashes of red integrated into the interior and carbon fiber trim bits throughout. Of course, the latest iDrive is installed, which has M view. M view loads the cluster screen with a big tachometer and space for two “widgets.” Widgets are things like a g-meter, tire pressure, and boost pressure.

The X5 M will start at $106,095. The X6 M is a bit more at $109,595. Add Competition to either name and prepare to pay an additional $9,000 for either one. All the specs look promising to provide mega performance, enough so that we can’t wait to tell you how it drives.
