The 2022 Hyundai Palisade is not only one of the hottest-selling three-row midsize SUVs, but it’s also one of the safest. The Palisade nabbed top honors from NHTSA with a five-star crash score and a 2021 IIHS Top Safety Pick+ rating—a rarity in its class. This is true no matter which trim level you choose (all share the rating), so it’s all about determining which set of features are essential. 2022 Hyundai Palisade SE Pros and Cons
The base trim loses none of the Palisade’s fundamental advantages—in addition to the top safety rankings, it’s also a spacious and well-thought-out vehicle. Although the interior is stylish, the matte silver finish of the center console can obscure the white button markings, making them hard to read during the day. Connectivity is less of an issue, as wireless connectivity for both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard.
Every Palisade features a 3.8-liter V-6 with 291 hp and 262 lb-ft of torque mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. It’s more powerful than the naturally aspirated V-6 found in the Honda Pilot (280 hp) but falls short of the Chevrolet Traverse (310 hp). Fuel economy is similar across all three, with the FWD Palisade netting 19/26 mpg city/highway. The Traverse clocks in at 18/27 mpg and the Pilot at 20/27 mpg. AWD drops the Palisade’s figures to 19/24 mpg.
It might be surprising to see paddle shifters as standard equipment on a three-row SUV, but seeing as the Palisade is prepped for towing up to 5,000 pounds even in base form, this is a convenient way to change gears when ascending or descending hills. The standard trailer sway control offers additional control, too.
2022 Hyundai Palisade SEL Pros and Cons
Moving up to the SEL trim provides more in the way of utility and convenience inside and out. Up top you’ll find roof rails, making it easy to transport bikes, kayaks, and the like.
It frames a power sunroof, while inside there’s an auto-dimming mirror with Homelink, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, an eight-way power driver’s seat, and heated front seats. The SEL also features proximity key entry with push-button start, as well as automatic climate control with second-row controls. Those second-row passengers will also appreciate the captain’s chairs, though it reduces overall passenger count to seven. These features command a price premium of more than $2,000 over the SE.
2022 Hyundai Palisade Limited Pros and Cons
Although the price jump is almost $10,000, the abundance of features on the Limited trim may make it worthy of consideration over the SEL if you’re looking for a well-equipped Palisade. All three rows benefit from leather seating, and up front you’ll find ventilated seats as well as an eight-way power passenger seat and acoustic front glass. The second-row seats are now heated, and sunshades protect passengers from outside glare. In the way back, the third row now electrically folds into the floor with the touch of a button. No matter where you’re seated, the driver can talk to you thanks to an in-car intercom. A hands-free power liftgate makes it easy to access the cargo area.
The Limited trim also includes satellite navigation, a 12-speaker stereo with subwoofer, and 115-volt power outlet. A 10.3-inch touchscreen replaces the smaller 8.0-inch one found on lesser trim levels. The instrument panel goes fully digital, featuring a 12.3-inch display. Situational awareness is better courtesy of a 360-degree surround-view camera setup, as well as a blind-spot monitor and rain-sensing wipers.
Keep in mind that 20-inch wheels come standard in this trim. In our three-row SUV comparison test, we found the ride of the Palisade Limited to be unnecessarily stiff, and the larger wheels are partly to blame. But given everything else the Limited trim adds, this will be a minor inconvenience for most buyers.
2022 Hyundai Palisade Calligraphy Pros and Cons
Introduced for the 2021 model year, the Calligraphy trim builds on the already-loaded Limited and adds an extra layer of mostly luxury-focused appointments. In terms of cost, Calligraphy is slightly more than a $1,000 premium over Limited. However, it has standard AWD, which is a $1,700 option on all other Palisades. That means it costs less than a Limited equipped with AWD.
With that in mind, we think choosing this trim comes down to personal taste. If a unique wheel design, quilted leather door panels, a microfiber suede headliner, and perforated leather steering wheel are enticing to you, then Calligraphy will fit the bill.
Which 2022 Hyundai Palisade Trim Is Best?
At first glance, the Limited trim seems to be the most ideal in terms of options, but that $45,000 price tag can be tough to swallow—especially considering the feature/price gap from the SEL trim. That said, choosing SEL unlocks some stand-alone options not available on SE, such as leather seating, a larger touchscreen, and a power liftgate. A lightly optioned SEL would be our choice because it delivers a comfortable Palisade experience without breaking the bank.
