Volvo’s new eclectic car battery could be capable of 621 miles on a single charge

The manufacturer says its new battery could offer a real-world range of up to 621 miles, almost double the capacity of Tesla. The battery is being developed alongside Swedish company Northvolt and is expected to be ready by 2025 at the earliest.

The next-generation Volvo XC90 will be the first car to feature the new battery technology.

An official announcement on the new tool is expected to be made next year.

Henrik Green, chief technology officer said simple updates would lead to “considerable improvements”.

He said this would include an expanded battery capacity and range.

He said: “We want to constantly increase the customer benefits of driving a pure electric Volvo car.

“By simplifying the design and integration of our battery cells, we can reduce weight and maximise space, allowing for considerable improvements in battery capacity, range and charging times.”

The time taken to top up vehicles is also expected to be dramatically cut with the new technology.

Current charging times are expected to be cut almost in half in a bid to entice drivers to make the switch.

From the launch of the new XC90, Volvo will offer bi-directional charging.

This will allow customers to offload excess electricity from their car battery straight back to the power grid.

This means drivers can power the grid when electricity production and prices are at their daily peak before charging their car when demand is down.

Mr Green said the new battery will offer a “sustainable” upgrade which will make drivers lives easier.
