Volkswagen California 6.1 camper van – first sketches

Volkswagen has revealed the first sketches and details of its new California T6.1 camper van, which will be making its debut next month. There’s a newly-minted front end, but most of the fresh action happens inside the vehicle.

The interior gets a new, redesigned dashboard and a switch to digital instrumentation via the inclusion of a Digital Cockpit. Also making its way on is a new online infotainment system (with integrated eSIM), and the roof-console mounted multi-functional camper control unit has now been redesigned and digitalised as well.

The living and sleeping areas of the vehicle have also been given a rework, the automaker saying that the space now features better optimisation. Like the Multivan 6.1 revealed earlier this year, the updated California 6.1 now comes equipped with electromechanical power steering and a number of driver assistance systems. These include lane assist, side protection and trailer assist, which aids manoeuvrability with a trailer. A side-wind compensation system also makes its way on.

The automaker says the new California 6.1 will be available in Europe with a range of 2.0 litre four-cylinder turbodiesel engines with outputs of up to 199 PS. The model will be officially unveiled at the Caravan-Salon expo in Dusseldorf, Germany at the end of August.
