A recent report from the Older Drivers Task Force found that car driver deaths in the 70 to 79 age group are expected to rise by 40 percent over the next 20 years. As a result of this, it recommended introducing mandatory eyesight testing with an optometrist or medical practitioner.

This would look to ensure road safety, with drivers being required to have an eye test for every driving licence renewal after the age of 70.

Another proposal included a national roll-out of an alternative to prosecution for careless driving for older motorists.

In response to the plans, many elderly drivers slammed the proposals, saying they were safe drivers, placing the blame on younger people.

Express.co.uk reader, Truebrit, said: “Yet more ammunition for the witch hunt of over 70 drivers.

“The young cause the most deaths and injuries.

“They should have to take drug and anger tests to prove their suitability to be even on the roads.

“Plus a refresher test to see how many bad habits they have picked up since passing their test.

“I bet 50 percent would fail.”

Similarly, photobuff shared the same opinion, saying elderly drivers have more than enough experience on the roads to be safe.

They said: “I am getting old but at least I am able to see a vehicle coming down the road.

“Unlike a lot of young drivers who just pull out in front of you so they can be one car ahead.”

The report, which was funded by the Department for Transport, also raised the possibility of a national roll-out of an alternative to prosecution for careless driving for older motorists.
